University of Szeged and Fulbright Hungary Establish Joint Grant for US Scholars
The University of Szeged and Fulbright Hungary signed a joint grant agreement in Szeged on Tuesday, November 10, 2015. Rector Gábor Szabó and Fulbright Director Károly Jókay made brief remarks in a ceremony officiated by Fulbright Alumna Prof. Dr. Katalin Nagy (’02 Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center). The University agreed to support one US scholar per year by sharing in the cost of housing, local and airport transporation, as well as providing office space for visiting US scholars. Prof. Nagy shared her experiences, while Rector Szabó recalled his own times in the US as life-changing.
The City of Szeged and the University are hosts to an EU-funded laser research infrastructure (ELI-ALPS: Extreme Light Infrastructure – Attosecond Light Pulse Source) scheduled to be on-line in late 2017 or 2018. Director Jókay noted the laser facility could be an excellent host for a US scholar in AY 2017-18, and Rector Szabó and Fulbright Hungary will make every effort to recruit representatives of all fields for a Fulbright at the University of Szeged.
