Kaddish in Budapest

Kaddish by Barbara LanciersThe stage adaptation of Nobel Prize ’02 winner Imre Kertész’s novel is directed by Barbara Lanciers (’07 Hungarian Theatre Museum and Institute). Kaddish will be performed in Budapest on June 5,6,7 at Jurányi Art and Cultural Incubator.

This is the 2nd Fulbright related Hungarian premiere of a play following Ashlin Halfnight‘s (’05 National Theater, Budapest) God’s Waiting Room last year in Kőszeg.

Contemporary Artists Reassess The Past’ lecture on reimagining the near past and constructing local identities by Linnea West (’12 Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art) on May 29, 2013 at Art School Budapest, a small art school in English Language with NVC (Nonviolent Communication) principals, offering a variety of courses in contemporary art and creativity development.

Skanzen visit

Skanzen, SzentendreOn May 3, 2013 the Commission organized a visit to the Skanzen Open Air Museum in Szentendre for the U.S. Fulbright grantees to Hungary to present folk architecture, interior decoration, farming and way of life in the Hungarian language area through original and authentic objects, relocated houses arranged in old settlement patters.

Golden Prize of the Academy

Damjanovich SándorSándor Damjanovich (’96 National Institutes of Health), full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has been awarded the Golden Prize of the Academy in the presence of the Prime Minister. The Prize has been awarded for one member of the Academy each year since 1961.

Tibor Frank (’87 University of California, Santa Barbara; UCLA; University of Nevada-Reno), former Chair of the Fulbright Board in Hungary and István Vásáry (’88 Smithsonian Institution) have been elected corresponding members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. There are 21 Fulbright Alumni members of the Academy to date.

Bettina FabosBettina Fabos (’12 Open Society Archives at Central European University) accepted the 2013 Presidential Award of the Chamber of Hungarian Architects Landscape Planning Section on behalf of her father, Julius Gyula Fabos professor emeritus at University of Massachusetts–Amherst.

Paula BrownPaula Brown (’12 Eötvös Loránd University) delivered a talk on April 23 at the ELTE Bárczi School of Special Education and on April 29 at the University of West Hungary Győr Campus entitled ‘Instruments to observe and measure how children with hearing impairment are doing in the classroom with inclusion and integration’.

Vass LászlóThe term of László Vass (’95 American University), former President of the Hungarian Fulbright Alumni Association and current Rector of Budapest College of Communication, Business and Arts has been extended for another 3 years by Zoltán Balog, Minister of Human Resources in the presence of István Klinghammer, State Secretary for Higher Education.

U.S. Student Conference AY 2012-2013

The Conference was attended by Jaye Chen, Executive Vice President, IIE New York and Daniel Kramer, Director, IIE Fulbright U.S. Student Program and a U.S. Fulbright alumnus himself to Germany as well as Cheryl Francisconi, Regional Educational Advising Coordinator for Southern Europe.

Following the presentations the U.S. student group and guests were invited to join the Hungarian Fulbright Alumni Association‘s event at the Constitutional Court, where Judge Péter Kovács (’02 University of Denver) delivered a special lecture.

Pécs-Villány-Siklós visit

Michele ShedlinOn April 12-13, 2013 U.S. Fulbright grantees to Hungary visited Pécs, the 2010 European Cultural Capital and met 3 grantees affiliated with the University of Pécs. Julia Kunin guided the group in the Zsolnay Factory, showing her atelier as well. Trevor Amery presented his works at the Faculty of Art of the University of Pécs. U.S. grantees also visited the fort and mosque in Siklós and the Villány wine region.
