KatonalevelekNew book: Letter of Soldiers – 2nd generation American Hungarians in the U.S. Army during World War II was compiled and edited by Ilona Kovács (’94 Kent State University & ’01 Library of the American Hungarian Foundation) and published by Zoltán Fejős (’88 Northwestern University & ’92 Yale University) director, Museum of Ethnography.

The volume was presented by Tibor Frank (’87 University of California, Santa Barbara; UCLA; University of Nevada-Reno) and Miklós Kontra (’92 Indiana University & ’02 Michigan State University) on December 18, 2012. Dr. Huba Brückner, Director Emeritus also attended the event.

Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis, U.S. Ambassador to Hungary held a reception in honor of Dr. Károly Jókay, Executive Director of the Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission (remarks), and to bid farewell to his predecessor, Dr. Huba Brückner on November 15, 2012 at the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs.

Ambassador Kounalakis presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr. Brückner, Director Emeritus for his outstanding service to the Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission promoting American Higher Education and strengthening the friendship between the United States of America and Hungary.

Dr. Lonnie Johnson, Executive Director, Austrian-American Fulbright Commission presented a Certificate of Recognition to Dr. Brückner in his capacity as Chair of the Conference of Fulbright Program Executive Directors in Europe.

The venue was featured by the presence the USAFE Touch & Go Air Force Band.

Csányi Foundation visitThe Csányi Foundation, founded by Dr. Sándor Csányi, Chairman and CEO, OTP Bank plc supports gifted, socially disadvantaged children through each milestone of their lives, assisting them to overcome socio-economic obstacles and to develop their innate talents. One of the keystone of the Foundation’s Lifelong Advantage Program is language acquisition.

On November 5, 2012 Christopher Berchild (’12 University of Pécs) visited the Pécs Community Center in order to meet Csányi students aged 12-16 years participating in the Foundation’s Talent Development Program.

On 10 November, 2012 David Frey (’12 Institute of History, Hungarian Academy of Sciences) and Annamária Sas, Fulbright American Program Officer traveled to Jászberény to speak with over 20 upper level Csányi students about the history and traditional celebrations of Halloween and Thanksgiving in North America. Ms. Sas (’89 Language Development Magnet School, TX) a Fulbright alumna herself baked a very traditional Thanksgiving food, a pumpkin pie for this occasion.
