A new, internet-based version of the TOEFL test has been introduced in the U.S. begining of September 2005 and July 2006 in Europe, it is administered on fixed dates in a network of secured internet-based test centers. It tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Some questions require test takers to combine more than one skill: to succeed academically in English-speaking colleges and universities, students need to be able to combine their language skills in the classroom. Integrated questions, or tasks in the new tests will help learners build the skills and confidence needed to communicate effectively in the academic environments they plan to enter. The new integrated tasks will ask test takers to

• read, listen and then speak in response to a question
• listen and then speak in response to a question
• read, listen and then write in response to a question

The new TOEFL test includes a Speaking section. This section includes six tasks, and test takers wear headphones and speak into a microphone when they respond. The responses are digitally recorded and transmitted to ETS’s Online Scoring Network where human scorers rate them. The scorers are carefully monitored for accuracy, so test takers and score recipients can be assured of the reliability of the Speaking scores. The Writing section has been expanded. The new test requires test takers to write a response to material they have heard and read, and to compose an essay in support of an opinion. Human scorers also rate the responses to the Writing tasks via ETS's Online Scoring Network. Score scale for Writing section is 0-5 points, typing required. The new test is about 4 hours long. All sections will be completed in one day. There is no computer tutorial, instructions for answering questions are given within each section. The test is not computer adaptive, each test taker receives the same range of questions. There is no grammar section, although grammar is evaluated in speaking and writing responses. Note taking is allowed. The new scores will be reported online. Test takers will be able to view scores online 10 days after the test, as well as receive a copy of their score report by mail. Colleges and universities will be able to view online scores, but will continue to receive scores via their current method of delivery. Test takers can register online or by phone. 2006 júliusától a TOEFL CBT helyett TOEFL iBT vizsga tehető le a tesztközpontban.

A vizsga számítógépen történik, egynyelvű, és fordítási részt nem tartalmaz. A vizsga során semmilyen segédeszköz nem használható. A vizsga díja 2011. július 1-től Magyarországon 220 USD, mely összeg az online jelentkezés során kártyás vásárlásként kerül levonásra.

Az összesen 4 - 4,5 órás, TOEFL iBT teszt 4 részből áll:

• Reading (olvasott szöveg értelmezése)
• Listening (hallás utáni megértés)
• Speaking (olvasott/hallott szöveggel kapcsolatos kérdésre adott szóbeli válasz)
• Writing (fogalmazás)

Az eredményt 0-120 pontig terjedő skálán értékeli a rendszer. A teszt eredménye a vizsgát követő 10. naptól megtekinthető az internetes regisztráció során létrehozott 'online profile'-ban. A hivatalos teszteredmény a vizsgát követő 4 héten belül postán érkezik az Egyesült Államokból a vizsgázó címére és a regisztráció során megjelölt maximum 4 intézményhez. Amennyiben a vizsgázó nem érte el a megkövetelt pontszámot, ismételt regisztráció és vizsgadíj befizetés esetén lehetősége van a vizsga újbóli letételére a következő héten. A teszt eredménye 2 évig érvényes.

A TOEFL iBT vizsga az elért pontszámtól függően (47-65 pont: B1 alapfok / 66-82 pont: B2 középfok / 83-120 pont: C1 felsőfok) kiegészítő vizsga nélkül egynyelvű C-nek; kiegészítő írásbeli vizsgával kétnyelvű C-nek felel meg. Who Takes It?

Each year, about 675,000 prospective graduate and business school applicants from 230 countries/regions take the test. Applicants come from varying educational and cultural backgrounds and the GRE revised General Test provides a common measure for comparing candidates' qualifications. GRE scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement your undergraduate records, recommendation letters and other qualifications for graduate-level study.

When and Where Do People Take It?

The GRE revised General Test is available at about 700 test centers in more than 160 countries. In most regions of the world, the computer-based test is available on a continuous basis throughout the year. In Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, the computer-based test is available one to two times per month. In areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available, the test is administered in a paper-based format up to three times a year in October, November and February.
