The Hungary Initiatives Foundation to support Fulbright Program

Budapest/Washington, March 14, 2014

The Boards of Directors of the Fulbright Commission, Hungary and of The Hungary Initiatives Foundation (HIF), Washington, are pleased to announce the signing of a multi-year cooperative agreement, in which the parties agree to jointly promote mutual understanding, educational exchange, scientific and cultural contacts between the people of Hungary and the United States of America. HIF’s grant to the Institute of International Education’s Fulbright Assistance Fund will enable Fulbright Hungary to support Hungarian and American scholars and students in the 2013-14 and the 2014-15 academic years for research and study in both the United States and Hungary.

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is the flagship worldwide international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. Hungary joined the Program in 1978. Based on a bilateral agreement between the governments of the U.S. and Hungary signed in 1990, the Hungarian-American Fulbright Program is administered by the Fulbright Commission in Hungary and by worldwide cooperating agencies such as the Institute of International Education in New York. The Hungary Initiatives Foundation is a U.S.-based, non-profit organization committed to strengthening the understanding and cooperation between Hungary and the United States of America. In line with its mission, the Foundation wishes to take an active part in the educational, academic, personal, and professional exchange between Hungary and the United States.

In the 2013-14 academic year, two additional students and one additional scholar from Hungary will carry out projects in the US. Also during this academic year, three more scholars from the US will be able to study and teach in Hungary.

HIF’s generous support continues in the 2014-15 academic year, when Fulbright Hungary is able to nominate a constant number of grantees. In the 2014-15 academic year, three scholars and four students from Hungary will be supported from these funds, and one additional US scholar can be nominated to work in Hungary. A broad range of academic subjects will covered during these two years, including, for example, US constitutional law, business studies, engineering, mathematics, architecture, communications, US studies, economics as well as theater and film arts.
